Amrik Kandola has been reappointed to the Civil Justice Council as a non-judicial member starting January 2027
The Lord Chancellor has recently confirmed Amrik Kandola's reappointment as a non-judicial member of the Civil Justice Council (CJC), effective from 1 January 2027 for a duration of one year. The CJC, established under the Civil Procedure Act 1997, serves as a statutory advisory body that brings together diverse stakeholders from the civil justice system, including members of the judiciary, civil servants, and legal professionals. The council aims to enhance the civil justice system’s accessibility, fairness, and efficiency while providing valuable advice to the government, judiciary, and Rule Committee.
Kandola's extensive background, particularly as a full-time commercial mediator, positions him well for this role. A former partner at Eversheds Sutherland LLP, he specialised in resolving disputes within the technology, engineering, construction, and energy sectors. Having joined the firm as a partner in 2002, he was instrumental on the firm's Board from 2011 until 2014. Since 2016, Kandola has focused on mediating complex, high-value commercial disputes, earning recognition as a CEDR Panel Mediator and Lead Faculty Trainer. He has even been honoured with the Civil/Commercial Mediator of the Year award, reflecting his expertise and commitment to the field.
The process for appointing non-judicial members to the CJC is overseen by the Lord Chancellor and regulated by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. This recent reappointment aligns with the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring that it meets the necessary regulatory requirements. Kandola's experience and insight will undoubtedly contribute to the ongoing review and improvement of the civil justice system in the UK, focusing on making it more effective and equitable for all users.
