Legal postcode lottery raises concerns over access

Recent research has highlighted significant disparities in solicitor availability across England and Wales affecting residents searching for legal assistance
New analysis from Face For Business has exposed a stark regional divide in the availability of solicitors throughout England and Wales, prompting critical concerns regarding access to legal services. The findings indicate that the East Midlands boasts the lowest number of solicitors per capita among English regions, with only 9.67 solicitors for every 10,000 residents. This region, which has seen a modest growth in practising certificate holders from 4,672 in 2012 to 4,833 in 2022, still lags behind other areas significantly. In stark contrast, Greater London has a far superior solicitor ratio, with 70 solicitors per 10,000 people.
Meanwhile, Mid Wales emerged as the area with the fewest solicitors among Welsh locations analysed, recording merely 1.9 solicitors per 10,000 residents. This figure starkly highlights the stark contrast in solicitor distribution, as prominent urban locations like Cardiff possess 12.4 solicitors per 10,000 people. As the Managing Director of Face For Business, Andy Macgregor notes, “For people living in areas with fewer solicitors per head, these figures raise important questions about the availability and distribution of legal services."
The implications of these figures are substantial, especially for residents grappling with issues such as employment disputes, family matters, or property transactions. Where solicitor numbers are low, residents may struggle to find suitable legal representation in their vicinity. Macgregor adds, “The contrast across Wales is particularly striking. Cardiff has 12.4 solicitors per 10,000 people, compared with just 1.9 in Mid Wales, about 86% lower." This disparity could compel individuals to seek legal assistance from more distant locations, which may result in increased travel costs and potential delays in accessing vital services.
The survey empasises the importance of exploring alternative options for securing legal support. “For anyone who feels they lack legal representation in their local area, it is worth exploring options beyond their immediate town or community," offers Macgregor. Utilising available resources, including local law societies and the Law Society’s solicitor-finding service, can help individuals identify appropriate firms that offer the necessary expertise.
This analysis serves as a wake-up call for both residents and policymakers to recognise the critical need for equitable access to legal services across all regions, ensuring that legal help remains within reach for everyone, regardless of their geographical location
