Yorkshire solicitor achieves top ranking

Ison Harrison's Gemma Vine has been recognised in the Chambers UK rankings for her significant legal work involving inquests and inquiries
Gemma Vine, a specialist inquest solicitor at Ison Harrison, has achieved Band 1 status in the latest Chambers UK directory rankings, securing national recognition for her impactful human rights and public inquiry work. This notable ranking underscores her reputation for representing bereaved families and vulnerable individuals through complex legal landscapes, particularly in coronial proceedings and public investigations. Based in Leeds, Gemma has been a prominent figure in high-profile legal campaigns focusing largely on mental health services, while also addressing cases concerning armed forces veterans and domestic violence.
One of Gemma's most remarkable achievements includes her pivotal role in reforming UK crossbow legislation. She collaborated with survivor Laura Sugden after the tragic murder of Shane Gilmer in 2018, leading a sustained legal and public campaign that culminated in government proposals to outlaw crossbow sales and introduce mandatory licensing.
As Ison Harrison strengthens its position as a leader in handling intricate public inquiry work, the firm's appointment as the lead law firm for the TEWV Public Inquiry indicates its commitment to representing numerous families facing pressing issues surrounding patient safety and care standards.
In her response to being named in the Band 1 ranking, Gemma remarked, "Securing Tier 1 status in Chambers is a significant personal honour, but more importantly, it highlights the strength and dedication of our entire department. Inquest and inquiry work is about fighting for truth, accountability, and long-overdue institutional change for families during their most vulnerable moments. Whether pushing for legislative overhaul on dangerous weapons or ensuring hundreds of voices are heard in major public inquiries, our team remains utterly committed to delivering justice."
Jonathan Wearing, managing partner at Ison Harrison, highlighted Gemma's achievement, stating, "Gemma’s inclusion at the very top of the Chambers rankings is thoroughly deserved. Her relentless advocacy, evident in both her pioneering work on crossbow law reform and her ongoing representation of families, exemplifies the high-calibre legal representation our firm strives to provide. As an employee-owned business, every member of our team is directly invested in our culture, practice standards, and service to clients. Gemma’s achievement reflects not only her exceptional personal expertise but also the strength, professionalism, and growing standing of our broader public law and regulatory practice on a national stage."
Ison Harrison has transitioned to a 100% employee-owned model, employing over 500 staff across Yorkshire and the North West, offering an extensive range of legal services. The firm was recently recognised among the UK's top ten employers in the "Best Big Places to Work" category by The Sunday Times.
