Three new directors for Bank of England

Tom Shropshire, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, has been reappointed alongside new non-executive directors, enhancing the Bank’s strategic oversight
The Bank of England has seen significant changes with the recent appointments and reappointments announced by Chancellor of the Exchequer, John Healey. He stated that "these appointments strengthen the Court at a critical moment for the UK economy", aiming to bolster the Bank's ability to maintain monetary and financial stability.
David Craig and Paul Nowak are now non-executive directors for four-year terms, set to last until 31 August 2030. They will fill positions previously held by Sir Ron Kalifa and Baroness Frances O'Grady, with their first Court meetings scheduled for 17 September and 22 October, respectively. Hanneke Smits is also stepping into a vital role beginning on 1 January 2027, replacing Sabine Chalmers, who will resign at the end of October 2026. Smits’ first Court meeting is set for 11 February 2027.
In addition to these newcomers, the Court welcomed back Lord Jitesh Gadhia and Tom Shropshire, both of whom will serve a second four-year term. Gadhia’s term begins on 24 October 2026, while Shropshire will commence on 1 November 2026. David Roberts, Chair of the Court, expressed gratitude towards Chalmers for her contributions and looks forward to continuing collaboration with Gadhia and Shropshire, highlighting their valuable experience as essential for the Court's ongoing responsibilities.
The Court of the Bank of England, acting as its board, plays a crucial role in overseeing the Bank’s strategy, governance, and risk management. It comprises the Chair, the Governor, four Deputy Governors, and a total of eight other Non-Executive Directors who provide independent judgement and extensive experience within the financial sector.
These appointments follow a fair and open recruitment process in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments, ensuring that candidates are evaluated on their own merits. It’s noteworthy that all newly appointed members have confirmed non-engagement in any party political activities for the last five years, reinforcing the Bank's commitment to impartial governance.
