Law firm Stephenson Harwood is set to launch its office in Madrid on 1 June 2026 with an eight-partner team, enhancing its European presence and supporting both domestic and international clients with interests in Spain
The new office forms part of the firm’s ambitious growth strategy across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Eifion Morris, Chief Executive Officer of Stephenson Harwood, expressed enthusiasm about the launch, stating “We’re incredibly excited to be launching our office in Spain, where we’ve brought together a group of high-quality lawyers with strong reputations in the market.”
The Madrid office will provide a full range of services, featuring a balanced focus on transactional work and dispute resolution to align with Stephenson Harwood’s international approach. Initially, the office will concentrate on two core sectors: Private Capital & Funds and Energy Transition & Infrastructure. The expertise across various legal areas includes corporate, tax, real estate, finance, restructuring and insolvency, as well as special situations and litigation.
“The firm is based in key locations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia – where our clients are investing and where they need us most,” Eifion added. With international investments increasingly drawn to Spain, particularly in technology and energy transition, the new office is deemed a natural progression for the firm. Eifion further elaborated on their strategy, highlighting “For Spanish clients, we offer an international platform combined with an agile, partner-led model that clients in Spain are increasingly turning to.”
Juan Oñate, the new Madrid Managing Partner, spoke about the unique attributes of the team, stating, “What makes this launch truly special is the team of partners we’ve assembled. Each brings deep expertise and a strong reputation in their field, and together we share a commitment to delivering commercial, partner-led advice.” He emphasised the importance of being part of an international firm, offering Spanish clients direct access to global expertise while maintaining a personal touch.
The partners joining the Madrid office boast extensive legal backgrounds and specialisations. Jesús Almoguera, an expert in arbitration and litigation, has vast experience in corporate and finance matters, while Carmen Alonso focuses on complex restructuring and corporate advisory. Antonio Cáneva brings banking and finance expertise, especially in the energy sector. Other key partners include Carlos González, Juan Oñate, Elena Oñoro, José Ramón, and Eduardo Vázquez de Prada, all of whom add considerable depth to the new office’s capabilities.
With its strategic emphasis on both contentious and non-contentious work, Stephenson Harwood's Madrid office aims to build a leading practice in Spain, reflecting the firm’s commitment to high-quality service and deep technical expertise in the legal market. This expansion follows a long history of the firm, which operates in multiple global locations, ensuring it remains a leading choice for clients navigating complex international challenges.
