Russell-Cooke boosts regulatory capability amid change

Russell-Cooke has enhanced its regulatory services with new appointments, addressing the evolving anti-money laundering landscape
In a strategic move, Russell-Cooke has announced the appointment of Nigel West as a consultant, further strengthening its legal services regulatory offering during a time of significant change in the legal sector. Nigel joins from Weightmans, complementing the firm's capacity following Susanna Heley's arrival as legal director last year. The growing concern regarding anti-money laundering (AML) supervision reforms, expected to shift responsibilities from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has prompted a rising demand for specialist regulatory support from law firms, partners, and individuals navigating complex compliance issues.
Michael Stacey, partner in the public and regulatory team, noted, “We are seeing a marked increase in demand from clients seeking support with regulatory risk, investigations and compliance - particularly as the framework around AML supervision evolves.” This highlights the urgency for firms to adapt to an increasingly complex environment as stricter enforcement and scrutiny loom.
Nigel West, recognised for his expertise in solicitors' regulation and professional discipline, emphasised the importance of industry experience in mitigating regulatory challenges. He stated, “Russell-Cooke has built a strong reputation for its regulatory work and its longstanding commitment to supporting legal professionals.” He underscored the necessity for “pragmatic, experienced advisers who can guide clients through investigations and disciplinary proceedings.”
The firm’s public and regulatory team is well-equipped to tackle a range of matters, including SRA investigations, governance issues, and wider regulatory litigation, making Russell-Cooke a valuable ally in today’s unpredictable regulatory landscape.
