MOJ launches funding competition for lawtech

The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has unveiled the Lawtech Grant Competition Phase III aimed at fostering innovation within the legal services sector. The competition invites applicants to compete for a grant of up to £3.62 million that will facilitate the next phase of the LawtechUK programme, which is set to commence in November 2026 and run until March 2029. This initiative aligns with the government’s objective to maintain the UK's status as a preeminent legal centre while enhancing access to legal services and bolstering international competitiveness.

Lawtech, which encompasses technological advancements that enhance the delivery of legal services, includes AI tools that assist individuals in comprehending their rights, software for automating mundane legal tasks, and platforms designed for digital dispute resolution. The sector has experienced transformative growth, particularly propelled by advancements in artificial intelligence, highlighting the necessity for ongoing innovation to adapt to the evolving demands of businesses and consumers.

This competition not only builds upon prior successes of the LawtechUK programme but also aims to propel the UK’s legal technology ecosystem forward. The objectives of the grant include significantly improving the tech landscape for SMEs, increasing the accessibility of legal services, and promoting foundational support for emerging technologies within the jurisdiction of England and Wales. As stated, the grant aims to "support the development of AI-driven legal technologies in line with the UK AI Action Plan".

Eligibility to apply is extended to UK-based registered entities who may participate either as individual organisations or as part of consortia. However, it is important to note that public sector organisations and individual applicants are excluded from participation. The application process will involve strict due diligence checks to review financial viability and governance structures.

Timelines for this process are in place, with applications due by 17.00 on 26 August 2026. Successful bidders will be notified in October 2026, paving the way for activities to commence in November.
