Lynne Berry confirmed as JAC Chair

The Deputy Prime Minister has appointed Lynne Berry CBE as the preferred candidate for Chair
The Deputy Prime Minister, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, has officially announced Lynne Berry CBE as his preferred candidate for the role of Chair of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC). The JAC serves as the statutory body responsible for identifying suitable candidates for judicial positions across England and Wales, as well as for several specialist tribunals that hold UK-wide powers. Following a comprehensive assessment process, which adhered to the Governance Code on Public Appointments and the Judicial Appointments Commission Regulations 2013, Berry’s selection has garnered significant attention.
Currently, Lynne Berry CBE holds multiple influential roles, including Chair of Governors and Pro-Chancellor at the University of Westminster. She is also the Chair of the Human Tissue Authority and a visiting Professor in Leadership at Bayes Business School, City, St George’s, University of London. Her extensive background comprises leadership positions as Chair or Senior Independent Director in several public sector and not-for-profit organisations. She previously held Chief Executive roles at notable institutions including the Charity Commission, the Equal Opportunities Commission, and the General Social Care Council, along with key contributions to charities such as the Royal Voluntary Service and the Family Welfare Association.
This appointment is subject to a pre-appointment hearing conducted by the Justice Select Committee. This scrutiny forms a critical component of the appointment process for significant public roles, aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability. Such hearings are conducted in public and provide a platform for the Select Committee to gather evidence before a final decision is made. Ministers will take the Committee's recommendations into account prior to confirming the appointment of the preferred candidate, ensuring a thorough evaluation process.
