Legal profession unites for cancer research

Law Beats Cancer is an innovative initiative by the legal community, aimed at funding vital cancer research
Today marks the launch of Law Beats Cancer, a pioneering initiative designed to bring together the legal profession in support of Cancer Research UK. This initiative aims to fund crucial cancer research projects that will lead to advancements in saving and improving lives. Over the last 50 years, Cancer Research UK has significantly contributed to doubling cancer survival rates in the UK. However, with nearly one in two people expected to receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, the necessity for ongoing investment in research is more pressing than ever.
Cancer Research UK relies heavily on donations from generous supporters to sustain its vital work in cancer research. Law Beats Cancer was established to unite solicitors, barristers, in-house legal teams, and suppliers in a shared mission to accelerate critical cancer research. This does not resemble traditional charity campaigns; instead, it incorporates thought leadership, networking, events, and various challenges to foster a sense of community and engagement within the sector.
The initiative has garnered substantial support from various entities within the legal field. The founding Board comprises notable figures, including Duncan Batchelor from Norton Rose Fulbright, Jenny Leahy from Freshfields, and Andrew Richards from CMS. Among the initial supporter firms are BCLP, Cleary Gottlieb, CMS, Dentons, and Linklaters, with many more in the pipeline to join the cause.
Duncan Batchelor, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright and Chair of the Law Beats Cancer Board notes, “Cancer Research UK’s progress against cancer depends on sustained investment in research, made possible by its supporters. The legal profession, meanwhile, has extraordinary networks and influence." He emphasised the unique aspect of this initiative, stating, “Nothing like this has been done before, linking solicitors, barristers and in-house teams." Batchelor envisions extending involvement to law students, highlighting that "it is more than a campaign, it is a movement and the potential is huge."
Claudia Nicholls, Executive Director of Marketing, Fundraising and Engagement at Cancer Research UK, expresses her enthusiasm stating, "Law Beats Cancer is a brilliant example of what happens when a profession decides to put its collective weight behind something that matters." She acknowledges the impact that the legal community can have, saying, "The legal community has real power to make a difference, and seeing that power directed towards life-saving cancer research is genuinely exciting."
