Tory MP laughs off fears of Brexit impact on legal sector
A Conservative politician has responded in a colourful manner to a fellow party member over suggestions that the legal market will be £1.7bn worse off post-Brexit.
Michael Fabricant, the MP for Lichfield, replied 'oh b******s' to the comment from former justice minister Jonathan Djanogly, who said he was expressing the thoughts of both commercial law firms and the Law Society.
Research commissioned by the Law Society and carried out by Oxford Economics estimated that between £225m and £1.7bn of yearly output would be lost if Britain was to leave the EU.
The outspoken MP acknowledged his 'unseemly' comment, which he said was in response to 'yet another scare story about what a disaster it would be if we were to leave the European Union'.
Compared to those members of the legal profession who are seeking to educate the public about the issue, Fabricant, who later apologised to the Commons Speaker for his crass remark, seemed blasé about the impact a Brexit could have on the legal sector.
No stranger to controversy, Fabricant recently offered his take on Crispin Blunt's admission that he had used 'poppers', stating on his Twitter account: 'I informed the Tea Room discussion on poppers that I had tried them but that my bottom remains intact.'
It remains to be seen what invaluable insight Mr Fabricant will provide next on pressing political issues.
