Heathrow expansion consultation launches today

The government launched a public consultation aimed at establishing a framework for future planning decisions related to the highly anticipated third runway at Heathrow Airport. This move marks a significant step closer to the expansion, which could potentially support over 60,000 new local jobs, enhance connectivity across the UK, and strengthen both international passenger and freight links. The consultation invites British businesses, communities, and the public to actively participate in shaping the future direction of one of the world’s leading hub airports, open until 1 September 2026.

Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander stated, “We’re a government of builders, not blockers, taking the steps needed to unlock billions in investment, boost growth, and create thousands of local jobs”. This consultation is seen as a pivotal milestone towards achieving a final planning decision set for 2029, while ensuring compliance with essential standards regarding noise, air quality, climate, and economic growth.

The expansion plans underline Heathrow's status as the world's busiest two-runway airport, accommodating a record 84 million passengers last year, intensifying the need to increase its capacity. Retailers, airlines, and various other sectors are poised to benefit from the anticipated economic growth, contributing approximately £40 billion to the UK economy, with significant benefits expected to reach areas beyond London and the South East.

The proposed framework for the new runway stipulates strict assessments against crucial criteria. These include a clear strategy focused on job creation, compatibility with the UK’s legally binding climate targets, adherence to air quality limits, and managing noise emissions to prevent further disturbance to local residents. Philip from the aviation sector noted, “This consultation is a key milestone in delivering the infrastructure our country needs”.

The government’s commitment to a swift planning process is underscored by the pledge to complete it three years faster than the last policy statement developed in 2018. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves remarked, “Growth is this government’s top priority, and we are backing the builders to get Britain moving”.

Additionally, the government has engaged the independent Climate Change Committee for advice on how the expansion aligns with the net-zero framework. Efforts are also underway to modernise airspace across the UK, facilitating more efficient flights that are quieter and emit less pollution, thus alleviating the industry’s climate change impact.

Overall, the public consultation on Heathrow's third runway marks an essential step forward in realising a project that promises to deliver extensive economic and social benefits while addressing the critical challenges of climate commitment and local community concerns.
