HCR Law continues to lead UK M&A

HCR Law has reinforced its status as the UK's top legal adviser for mergers and acquisitions
HCR Law has once again asserted its dominance in the UK mergers and acquisitions (M&A) landscape, achieving a leading position in the Experian MarketIQ Q1 2026 rankings. The firm ranks first nationally, boasting a significant 37% lead over its closest rival as the market evolves into one defined by selectivity rather than sheer volume. “It’s encouraging to see HCR remain number one nationally at a time when overall deal activity is down,” stated Richard Wilkey, Head of Corporate at HCR Law, highlighting the firm's resilience in the face of challenges posed by international uncertainty and domestic pressures.
The current trend in UK M&A is reflective of a 'volume down, value up' approach, characterised by fewer, yet larger and more strategic transactions driving deal values. Buyers are demonstrating increased discipline, complemented by enhanced due diligence processes and extended timelines. This shift in focus is also supported by robust activity led by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and continued inbound interest from US investors, pointing to a market that is adapting intelligently to changing dynamics.
HCR Law's performance across various regions in the UK is equally impressive. The firm holds the top rankings in the South East, South West, and the East of England, which has recently climbed to joint first place. Meanwhile, the Midlands has also achieved the number one position year on year, and Wales showed remarkable improvement, rising to first place in its category. London, while still a significant player, ranked third in this quarter's findings.
These results solidify HCR Law's reputation as a national adviser capable of managing corporate transactions regardless of their size. Wilkey noted, “Our performance this quarter reflects the strength of our team and our regional reach, as the market continues to shift towards more selective, higher value transactions,” emphasising the importance of HCR’s comprehensive approach to client engagement. As the M&A market continues to evolve towards fewer yet more substantial opportunities, HCR Law's commitment to supporting clients through every stage of the transaction process remains unwavering.
