Courts expansion ensures speedier justice now

The permanent establishment of four former Nightingale Courts will enhance justice delivery for victims nationwide
The Ministry of Justice has announced a significant expansion to the court estate, ensuring that thousands of victims will receive justice more swiftly. Four former Nightingale Courts in Fleetwood, Telford, Chichester, and Cirencester, which served as temporary facilities during the pandemic, will now become permanent fixtures. This transition provides an additional 11 courtrooms across the country, specifically aimed at addressing a range of criminal, family, and civil cases.
The announcement coincides with a visit by Courts Minister Sarah Sackman to the site of the new London Law Courts, a cutting-edge facility set to open next year. The modern court will feature 18 new courtrooms capable of handling various cases, signifying a pivotal move towards making justice delivery more efficient and transparent.
As part of its Plan for Change, the government is committing to invest further in these courts, allowing them to modernise and adapt to the latest technology. Minister for Courts Sarah Sackman KC MP stated, "This marks a new chapter for these courts. We’re ending the Nightingale era and making a lasting investment in justice." This commitment not only addresses immediate needs but also looks to reform the overarching justice system, which she described as "on the brink of collapse."
The closure of the Nightingale courts initiative, which peaked at 60 temporary setups during the pandemic, reflects a decisive shift in approach. This year, the government is allocating £148.5 million for repairs and upgrades to courts across England and Wales, tackling longstanding issues that have contributed to delays. In parallel, funding for Crown Courts has been increased, allowing more hearings to take place throughout the financial year. The Deputy Prime Minister has also announced that more ambitious reforms will be introduced to alleviate the Crown Court caseload when parliamentary time permits, fostering a sustainable future for the justice system.
