Bott and Co transitions to employee ownership

has become 100% employee-owned, marking a significant milestone in its journey

After more than two decades, Wilmslow-based law firm Bott and Co has successfully transitioned to complete employee ownership. This move to an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) is a strategic decision intended to preserve the firm's independence and culture while ensuring a robust future. Founded in 2001 by Paul Hinchliffe, David Bott, and Gary Froggatt, the firm has established itself as one of the UK's leading consumer law firms, actively engaging in pivotal cases in consumer justice. Notably, Bott and Co has led significant cases on flight delay laws in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, and has pioneered support for clients navigating low-value road traffic accident claims through the Official Injury Claims Portal.

Over the years, Bott and Co has adeptly adapted to changing market and regulatory landscapes, notably with the rise of OIC Portal claims. Leaders at the firm acknowledge that engaging with complex and litigious areas of law requires a non-traditional yet scalable operating model. Recognising that technology should support, rather than replace human expertise, Bott and Co has focused on creating a blend of skilled personnel, effective processes, and technological tools.

Managing Director Paul Hinchliffe expressed confidence in the firm's capabilities: “Employee ownership is the right ownership model for us because it recognises the contribution of the people in the business and gives them a meaningful stake in its future.” As the founders gradually step back from daily operations over the next few years, they plan to transfer responsibilities to a capable internal management team, ensuring continuity and independence.

The evolution of the consumer claims sector presents ongoing challenges, including new regulations, technological advancements, and changing client expectations. However, Bott and Co is committed to maintaining its strong culture and operational discipline in the face of these challenges. The firm’s mission remains clear: to help consumers understand and enforce their rights in a professional and sustainable manner.

Hinchliffe further stated, “We are grateful to everyone who has been part of the Bott and Co story so far... Employee ownership is not the end of that story. It is the next chapter, and one we believe gives Bott and Co the best possible foundation for the future.”
