Boosting family legal aid services urgently needed

In a recent announcement published on 2 June 2026, the Legal Aid Agency has expressed the necessity to increase capacity in family legal aid services to ensure timely access to legal advice and representation. This initiative aims to draw in more organisations to deliver family legal aid work across various regions, including Dorset, Dudley, East Sussex, Hartlepool, Knowsley, Sandwell, Solihull, and St. Helens. Applications are welcome from current legal aid providers wishing to expand as well as new entrants into the legal aid market.

"We would like to increase capacity to support timely access to legal advice and representation," a spokesperson for the Legal Aid Agency stated. They elaborated on the current dire situation, explaining that "families use legal aid when dealing with issues such as domestic abuse, care proceedings or disputes involving children." Given that these core issues are prevalent, ensuring robust legal aid coverage is paramount.

Contracts will be awarded to successful applicants under the terms of the 2024 Standard Civil Contract, with an intention to initiate the contracts promptly after the verification process is concluded. Aspiring providers must demonstrate their ability to meet the specified quality and supervisory standards set forth in the contract.
