UK promotes candidate for international justice

The Lord Chancellor advocates for Professor Dapo Akande's candidacy to the International Court of Justice
The Lord Chancellor, Alex Norris, will address the United Nations General Assembly, advocating for Professor Dapo Akande's election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ahead of the upcoming election on November 3rd. In his speech, he will emphasise the importance of supporting the rule of law in a world that is increasingly unstable, highlighting the vital role the ICJ plays in enabling states to resolve disputes peacefully and upholding the principles that underpin international relations. The Lord Chancellor will assert that Professor Akande would bring much-needed qualities to the court, stating, “At a moment when international law is under pressure, Professor Akande brings the independence, legal rigour, judgement and breadth of perspective that the Court needs. He would make a formidable contribution to its work.”
Additionally, during the address, Justice Secretary Norris will express the UK’s commitment to judicial independence by opposing sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC). He will clarify that "the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court have distinct jurisdictions and mandates", but that the underlying principle of judicial independence is crucial. Norris argues that “Attempts to impede their work weaken not only the institutions targeted, but the wider international legal order on which all States rely.” This visit and support for Professor Akande reflect the UK's ongoing dedication to strengthening justice, human rights, and the rules-based international system, especially significant as it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the ICJ's founding.
