UK intensifies crackdown on Russian sanctions evasion

The UK government is launching tough new measures to counter Russian sanctions evasion, targeting crypto networks and illicit financial infrastructure
In a decisive move against Russia's ongoing attempts to circumvent sanctions, the UK has introduced a new package of measures aimed at disrupting cryptocurrency exchanges and the Kremlin-backed A7 network. With these sanctions coming into effect immediately, the UK reinforces its commitment to supporting Ukraine while intensifying pressure on Putin’s war machine. The A7 network is notorious for facilitating military procurement and processing transactions tied to Russian oil sales, which provides significant funding for military operations.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed the UK’s determination to combat these evasive tactics by saying, "If the Kremlin thinks it can evade our sanctions by hiding behind crypto networks and shadow financial systems, it is gravely mistaken." The new sanctions target organisations and individuals linked to the A7 network, uncovering the clandestine financial operations that sustain Putin’s aggressive military actions. It has been noted that the network was responsible for moving over $90 billion last year, roughly half of Russia’s annual military budget.
This latest crackdown underscores the UK’s proactive stance in adapting sanctions to counter evolving Russian strategies. Cooper emphasised the importance of this approach, mentioning, "We are tracking down and shutting off the financial lifelines that sustain Putin’s war machine." As Russia struggles under the weight of international sanctions, with losses exceeding $450 billion, the UK stands resolute in its mission to weaken the Kremlin's financial capabilities.
The UK government's commitment extends beyond immediate financial sanctions. Cooper affirmed, "There will be no safe havens for those enabling Russia’s aggression." The government aims to work closely with international partners to ensure a unified front against illicit financial networks. The effort will safeguard the integrity of the global financial system and support Ukraine for as long as necessary.
The consequences of Russia's actions in Ukraine have instigated a strong response from the international community. The UK has already sanctioned over 3,300 individuals, businesses, and ships connected to Russia’s war efforts, signalling a clear stance against aggression. Cooper stated, “As long as the killing in Ukraine continues, the UK and its allies stand ready to ratchet up pressure on Russia and will continue to strengthen sanctions at every opportunity."
As the situation develops, the UK remains committed to eroding Russia’s ability to fund its conflict and uphold the shared values of safety and stability for all European nations.
