SRA responds to LSB's concerns about risks

The SRA acknowledges the evolving legal sector risks and emphasises the need for proactive regulatory change
In response to the Legal Services Board's (LSB) press release, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has highlighted its efforts to address the growing risks associated with high growth, acquisitive legal firms. The rapidly changing landscape of the legal sector has brought about new challenges, particularly in terms of consumer welfare. The SRA has collaborated closely with the LSB to ensure compliance with their directives while recognising the urgency to tackle these emerging threats.
In a statement, the SRA expressed its shared concerns, stating "We share the LSB’s concerns around the business model of high growth, highly acquisitive firms that are increasingly linked to that risk." This collaboration seeks to mitigate the considerable harm that may arise from the failures of such firms, underscoring the SRA's commitment to consumer protection.
The SRA has made strides in enhancing its risk and data capabilities to identify threats more proactively. However, as emphasised by PM Law Ltd, these efforts must be combined with immediate actions to manage known risks and strategic long-term changes to prevent future occurrences. The regulatory body has outlined measures such as fast-tracking tighter controls on client money and piloting supervision of firms with intricate business structures to address high-risk areas.
Looking ahead, the SRA aims to transform its regulatory approach fundamentally. The organisation plans to shift towards an intelligence-led, proactive supervisory model designed to assist firms in achieving compliance while minimising potential harm and costs in the future. As part of this transformation, the SRA will provide further details in its forthcoming business plan, set to be released on Friday.
Acknowledging the magnitude of the work ahead, the SRA stated, "We are realistic that this is a large amount of work for an organisation that is already under significant constraints, but it is necessary and urgent." The commitment to work in tandem with the LSB reflects the SRA's determination to implement necessary changes swiftly and effectively, reinforcing its dedication to safeguarding consumers in an evolving legal landscape.
