SRA joins AI Growth Lab initiative

The SRA is collaborating on an initiative to boost responsible AI innovation in the legal sector
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has announced its participation in the Government’s newly established Advisory AI Growth Lab, as revealed by the Ministry of Justice. This government-funded initiative is designed to provide innovators with the opportunity to responsibly test AI products within existing regulatory frameworks. The AI Growth Lab aims to accelerate the development and deployment of AI products and services specifically in the legal sector, while also assisting innovators in navigating various regulatory challenges.
By offering greater clarity to innovators, the Initiative is expected to foster responsible innovation and stimulate economic growth, which will ultimately lead to better access to justice. This will be achieved by enabling faster and more affordable services while ensuring that the high professional standards expected by consumers are upheld. The decision to make the legal services sector the first area involved in the initiative reflects the strong demand for innovations and the unique opportunity to enhance collaboration through coordinated regulatory information.
Joining the SRA in the Advisory AI Growth Lab are the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and the Legal Services Board (LSB). This collaborative effort aims to address cross-regulatory challenges faced by innovators. SRA Chief Executive Sarah Rapson commented on the significance of AI in the legal world, stating “AI is already transforming legal services, from enabling small businesses to recover debts, to helping consumers navigate complex legal processes. These tools are improving access to justice in a practical and meaningful way. The lab will accelerate this progress, supporting the growth of legal services that benefit the public, and that maintain the high professional standards that underpin trust in the legal profession.”
