Shakespeare Martineau has appointed David Smithen to expand its South West development growth initiatives
In a strategic move to bolster its presence in the South West, Shakespeare Martineau has appointed David Smithen as a new real estate partner in its Bristol office. With over 30 years of experience in residential development, commercial real estate, and strategic land, David joins from TLT, bringing a wealth of knowledge from his past roles at esteemed firms such as Eversheds, Pinsent Masons, Arthur Andersen, and Gateley.
Renowned in the development sector, David has extensive expertise acting for national and regional developers, landowners, and investors on complicated, high-value transactions. His work encompasses a range of activities, including commercial development, residential schemes, strategic land agreements, and mixed-use regeneration projects. In his new role at Shakespeare Martineau, David will focus on expanding the firm’s client base in both residential and commercial development, while also supporting broader growth across the region.
David stated, "Shakespeare Martineau has a well-earned reputation as a national specialist in development law, with the ambition, scale and strength-in-depth to support clients on major schemes. The firm’s energy and drive really stood out to me, and I saw an exciting opportunity to help grow its presence in the South West." He emphasised the intricate nature of real estate development, remarking, “Real estate development is a complex and demanding area of law – but one that’s incredibly rewarding. I enjoy problem-solving and delivering practical, commercially-focused results that help bring transformational developments to life.”
David’s recent accomplishments include managing significant development projects, such as a £10 million land sale and management agreement in South Gloucestershire, as well as overseeing the acquisition, funding, and development of a sprawling 90-acre mixed-use scheme in Exeter. He has also played a critical role in securing a £20 million financing facility for a care home portfolio in the South East, in addition to advising on various forward-funded mixed-use schemes, including a major NHS health hub in Weston-Super-Mare.
His appointment is expected to enhance Shakespeare Martineau's residential development capabilities further, aligning with the firm's continued investment in its specialist sector teams. Victoria Tester, partner and managing director at Shakespeare Martineau, remarked, “David’s track record and depth of experience in the development market makes him an excellent addition to our team. His arrival reinforces our commitment to growth in the South West and our focus on supporting clients involved in high-impact, strategically important developments. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the firm.”
