Serena Sutherland begins Law Society presidency

Serena Sutherland has officially taken office as the new President of the Law Society of Scotland bringing her Orcadian insight to the role
Having succeeded Patricia Thom, she made history by becoming the first president based in the Northern Isles at the Council meeting held in Edinburgh today.
A dedicated legal professional, Serena has built her career at local firm d and h since starting as a secretary in 2003. Under her ownership since 2016, the firm has provided essential legal services across the north of Scotland, with offices in Kirkwall, Stromness, and Thurso. She has represented various communities, including Dingwall and Stornoway, on the Society's Council since July 2018 and served on several key committees affecting legal aid and regulation.
In her first remarks as President, Serena said that it is a proud moment as she steps into the role, emphasising her commitment to advocating for Scottish solicitors and addressing legal issues affecting the general public. Notably, she expressed optimism about the opportunities within Scotland’s legal sector while also acknowledging the challenges ahead.
Serena added that she will focus on pushing for reforms in Scotland's legal aid system, promoting sustainable practices, and harnessing the potential of emerging technologies to improve the sector. Supporting her in this endeavour is the new Vice President, John Mulholland, who is returning for a second term after previously serving in 2019-20. John expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Serena and serve the solicitor profession effectively over the coming years.
As the Law Society of Scotland continues its vital work for over 13,000 solicitors, the leadership transition marks a significant moment for both the organisation and the legal community at large.
