Robert Courts KC MP Sworn in

In a formal ceremony attended by the Lord Chancellor and Clerk to the Crown, Robert Courts KC MP was sworn in as His Majesty's Solicitor General for England and Wales. The ceremony also marked his appointment to the prestigious rank and office of King's Counsel (KC).

Expressing his honour and privilege, HM Solicitor General Robert Courts KC MP stated, "It is a great honour and privilege to be sworn-in today as Solicitor General for England and Wales." He emphasized the crucial and distinctive role that Law Officers play in advising the government.

The Solicitor General, in tandem with the Attorney General, oversees the Law Officers' Departments, including the Crown Prosecution Service, the Serious Fraud Office, the Government Legal Department, and HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate. The role involves upholding the rule of law at the core of the UK constitution.

In his capacity, the Solicitor General supports the Attorney General as the Government's chief legal adviser. Beyond advising the government, the Solicitor General independently carries out vital functions in the public interest. This includes evaluating whether to refer unduly lenient sentences to the Court of Appeal and addressing contempt of court issues.

Speaking about the appointment, Attorney General Rt Hon Victoria Prentis KC MP congratulated Robert Courts MP and expressed anticipation in working together to advise the government, superintend government departments, and uphold the rule of law.

The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant moment as Robert Courts takes on the responsibilities of the Solicitor General, contributing to the administration of justice and the adherence to the rule of law within the UK's legal framework.
