Self-harm among prisoners reached a record high of 61,461 incidents in the 12 months to September 2019. This was up 16 per cent on the previous year, according to the Ministry of Justice. It also reported a 14 per cent increase in the number of selfharm incidents per individual. There were 84 apparent self-inflicted deaths among prisoners in the 12 months to December 2019 (a rate of one per 1,000 prisoners).
