Prime Minister addresses urgent justice reforms

The Prime Minister delivered remarks at a criminal justice roundtable yesterday afternoon, focusing on necessary reforms following a horrific terror attack in Golders Green. The incident, which specifically targeted Jewish individuals, has raised significant concerns regarding security and safety within the community. "What we saw last night was people being targeted because they are Jewish," he stated, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.

This attack is part of a troubling trend, with an increasing number of incidents against the Jewish community noted in recent weeks. "There is a very deep sense of anxiety," the Prime Minister acknowledged, drawing attention to the urgent need for a cohesive response. He referenced a recent visit to Kenton Synagogue, where he heard firsthand accounts from individuals affected by previous attacks.

Recognising the broader implications of such violence, he stated, "an attack on our Jewish community is an attack on all of us," emphasising the shared responsibility in countering hate. Following the attack, a COBR meeting was convened to coordinate immediate responses and implement enhanced security measures. The Prime Minister announced an increase in funding to bolster these security efforts and highlighted the drive to fast-track legislation addressing malign state actors and the root causes of antisemitism.

As several suspects are currently being processed within the criminal justice system, the Prime Minister reinforced the need for swift and visible responses to such events. He stipulated the importance of instilling confidence in the criminal justice system, stating, "it can act in a swift, agile, and visible way." Addressing the attendees, he expressed a commitment to ensuring a collective effort in combatting hate and fostering an inclusive society.

"This is our fight as well," he asserted, urging for a united front in defining the values of the nation and advocating for a community free from intolerance. The remarks serve as a call to action for all sectors of society, aiming to unify efforts in tackling the challenges posed by extremism and antisemitism.
