Norton Rose Fulbright has announced the appointment of Duncan Bagshaw to enhance its international arbitration team
Global law firm Norton Rose Fulbright has welcomed international arbitration specialist Duncan Bagshaw as a partner in its London office. Bagshaw, who joins the firm from Howard Kennedy, boasts significant experience in international disputes, particularly within the energy sector and African-related matters. His expertise spans issues relating to electricity generation, supply, and renewable energy projects, along with advisory roles concerning joint ventures and commercial contracts.
Duncan Bagshaw participates in arbitrations under various esteemed rules, including the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). He is also actively involved in the courts of England and Wales, including the Supreme Court. Furthermore, he holds the position of vice-chair for the ICC UK Arbitration and ADR Committee and is a member of the ICC Global Commission and the Registrar of the Scottish Arbitration Centre. His outstanding reputation is reflected in his regular citation as a leading practitioner in Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners guides.
Having qualified as a barrister and called to the Bar in 2003, Duncan practiced in this capacity until 2012 when he became the inaugural Registrar of the LCIA-MIAC Arbitration Centre in Mauritius. There, he aimed to position Mauritius as a notable hub for dispute resolution and promote international arbitration across Africa.
Patrick Bourke, Head of Dispute Resolution and Litigation for Europe, the Middle East, and Asia at Norton Rose Fulbright stated that Duncan will greatly enhance their international arbitration offering to clients given the breadth and depth of his experience in key sectors and jurisdictions. Ruth Cowley, the Global Co-Head of International Arbitration at the firm, expressed excitement about Duncan's addition to their global team, highlighting his past engagement in high-profile commercial disputes and international arbitration cases, particularly in fast-growing emerging markets.
Duncan noted that Norton Rose Fulbright has a strong historical track record in navigating complex international arbitration cases worldwide, providing essential support from the onset of a dispute through to the enforcement of an award. He believes the firm’s rich experience in emerging markets and the energy sector provides an exceptional platform for assisting clients with their most challenging disputes. Notably, Norton Rose Fulbright's international arbitration team is managing over 70 active cases with a staggering combined total value exceeding US$240 billion.
