Myers & Co fundraising to support prostate testing

Myers & Co raises £2,600 to support prostate testing initiatives, benefiting hundreds of men across Staffordshire
Law firm Myers & Co has successfully raised £2,600 to aid prostate testing efforts in North Staffordshire, significantly contributing to the North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group. This initiative, which was the firm's chosen charity for the year ending June, aims to assist local men in accessing crucial PSA tests. The funds will directly support PSA testing evenings hosted by the Stoke-on-Trent Lions Club and the Uttoxeter Lions Club, who collectively test nearly 1,000 men annually. Clive Stevenson, co-founder and chairman of the support group, expressed the impact of this contribution, stating, “The money raised by Myers & Co will make a huge difference to our ability to support local men.” The PSA test plays a vital role in detecting potential prostate issues that can be examined further by healthcare professionals.
Throughout the year, Myers & Co employees engaged in various fundraising activities, including tombolas, a challenging 10-mile walk, exciting raffles, a bake-off competition, and an Asian food feast, showcasing their commitment to the cause. Stevenson highlighted the increasing need for these testing sessions, especially in light of government restrictions on who can request a PSA test, noting that “The test costs around £30 per man, and we have supported these events by donating £1,000 to each organisation this year.” He also stressed that the donation from Myers & Co would enable continued support for similar initiatives in the coming year.
Beyond funding testing events, a portion of the proceeds will help with the group's operational costs, including venue hire, website maintenance, and leaflet printing. The North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group offers monthly meetings in Hanley, providing crucial peer support and information to patients and their families. These gatherings are augmented by a clinical nurse specialist who offers professional guidance, enhancing the group's resources.
Commenting on the partnership, Myers & Co director Jen Goodwin, who leads the firm's corporate efforts, said, “We chose the North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group because of the important work it does to support men and their families, as well as to raise awareness.” Goodwin also shared her enthusiasm about the fundraising events, indicating that “Knowing that the money we have raised will help fund PSA testing for hundreds of local men makes all the hard work worthwhile.” The collective efforts of the community highlight the importance of local support in combating prostate cancer and ensuring men have access to life-saving tests.
