Litera unveils AI automation for legal security

Litera launches Clean+, a cloud-based metadata cleaning service that enhances security for law firms without infrastructure burdens
In a significant advancement for law firm communications, Litera has unveiled Clean+, a new cloud-hosted evolution of its widely used Metadact Server. This innovative solution aims to protect sensitive information by addressing the hidden risks associated with metadata within outbound email attachments. “The practice of law runs on trust, and hidden document data breaks it,” emphasised Joey Benedek, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Litera. With the constant need for speed and volume in legal work, Litera recognises that a single oversight in metadata handling can lead to severe repercussions, including breaches of client confidence and legal ethics inquiries.
Clean+ provides server-grade metadata protection across all Outlook environments, fully managed by Litera, eliminating the burden on IT departments to provision, patch, or maintain server infrastructure. As lawyers increasingly rely on AI to draft and collaborate, the number of outbound documents is on the rise, amplifying the potential for metadata vulnerabilities. Litera’s solution ensures that a unified policy is enforced across various Outlook platforms and devices, allowing legal professionals to send documents without the fear of accidental metadata exposure.
“Clean+ gives IT leaders the server-class protection their firm depends on without the infrastructure burden that has always come with it,” Benedek noted, highlighting the efficiency of the service in today’s fast-paced legal environment. Built on a deterministic, rules-based engine honed over 30 years and trusted by 42% of the market according to the 2025 ILTA Tech Survey, Clean+ sets a high standard in metadata management that no AI-first competitor can replicate.
Additionally, Clean+ is part of a broader initiative to consolidate the Metadact product line under the Clean brand, providing law firms with a clear tiered structure for document protection. Other offerings include Clean Desktop, Clean Cloud, and Clean Server, ensuring that various deployment models are well supported. Clean+ is available as a standalone package and integrated into Draft Advanced, Litera's comprehensive AI drafting suite. Existing users of Metadact Server will benefit from dedicated migration support, with the service expected to be generally available on June 30.
