Legal profession under increasing pressure

Solicitors in England and Wales face escalating complexities affecting their wellbeing, underscored by rising demand for support
Solicitors across England and Wales are confronted with mounting pressures as highlighted in The Solicitors’ Charity’s Big Report 2025–2026. The report indicates that demand for support has tripled since 2023, signalling both a heightened need and a shift in the nature of challenges facing legal professionals. Unlike previous years where challenges were often singular, many solicitors now grapple with interconnected issues spanning emotional, professional, physical and financial wellbeing. These challenges can accumulate, complicating management without adequate support systems in place.
In response, The Solicitors’ Charity has provided significant assistance, including £1.27 million in financial awards and grants, over 5,600 hours of direct case manager support, and tailored referrals across four areas of wellbeing. The report underscores the effectiveness of timely support, with 83% of respondents stating they felt more positive and better equipped to cope after receiving help, illustrating the profound impact of cohesive support during challenging times.
Nick Gallagher, CEO of The Solicitors’ Charity, acknowledged the evolving landscape of solicitor needs, saying “What we are seeing is not just increased demand, but more complex need. Challenges rarely exist in isolation, which means support has to help alleviate the full extent of what someone is going through.” He emphasised that timely and appropriate support can significantly transform how individuals navigate their difficulties.
The findings serve as a critical reminder of the necessity for ongoing awareness and engagement within the legal profession. The effectiveness of The Solicitors’ Charity’s initiatives relies on the commitment of firms, organisations, and the broader legal community to ensure that vital support remains accessible to those in need. An anonymous beneficiary expressed gratitude, sharing “Support was there when I needed it most, and it helped bring me back from a very dark place.”
As the demand for support intensifies, the report reminds us that fostering solicitor wellbeing transcends immediate crises; it is about fortifying the frameworks that enable professionals to recover, rebuild their confidence, and move forward in their careers.
