Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP has launched a Structured Products and Derivatives practice with new partners
Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP has announced the establishment of a new Structured Products and Derivatives practice in London. This initiative is led by two partners, Jennifer Kafcas and Alvino van Schalkwyk, who have joined from Crowell & Moring LLP. Their arrival not only signifies a strategic growth for Katten but also strengthens the firm's capabilities in structured finance and financial markets. Kafcas and van Schalkwyk are well-versed in handling high-value, complex derivatives and structured products transactions, addressing a spectrum of structuring, legal and documentation issues across all major asset classes.
Katten's Chairman Gil Soffer stated, “Bringing on these talented attorneys reflects our commitment to executing our strategic plan, specifically pursuing high-caliber lateral teams that deepen our bench strength in finance and expand our London platform to meet our clients’ evolving needs.” He expressed optimism that this move reinforces the firm's position as a crucial player on both sides of the Atlantic.
The new practice extends the existing capabilities of Katten’s Structured Finance and Securitization practice, which is co-chaired by Anna-Liza Harris and Howard Schickler. Additionally, it aligns with the Financial Markets and Funds practice, chaired by Global Chair Lance A. Zinman. Harris emphasised the importance of this expansion by saying, “As derivatives markets grow more complex and regulatory demands intensify around the world, our clients increasingly need trusted advisors with both technical depth and strong cross-border experience.”
Kafcas and van Schalkwyk's expertise will benefit a diverse client base, including major banks, alternative capital providers, corporates, and private equity funds across global markets. Their services will encompass a broad range of products including transaction-linked instruments and structured finance solutions, which effectively cater to both buy-side and sell-side participants.
Zinman commented on the strategic significance of their addition, “As a long-established leader in the derivatives industry, we’re further strengthening our ability to serve clients by adding this caliber of talent in London.” He noted that their expertise will enable the firm to deliver comprehensive cross-border client counsel, enhancing Katten's standing as a full-service practice.
Both Kafcas and van Schalkwyk bring extensive experience, having managed substantial transactions across Asia, Europe, the UK, the United States, and Latin America. Their unique insights into evolving legal and regulatory landscapes further solidify the firm’s commitment to meeting the sophisticated needs of its clientele. Following their addition, Katten continues to grow its London team, recently welcoming other partners including Restructuring Partner James Davison and Intellectual Property Partner Nathan Smith.
