Judith Harling Coward earns prestigious legal accolade

Judith Harling Coward has been named the winner of the Kent Law Society’s Trailblazer in Law Award for 2026, recognising her outstanding contributions to surrogacy law
This emerging area within family law has seen significant growth, and Coward has played a crucial role in developing specialist expertise at Whitehead Monckton’s Family Law team. The Trailblazer in Law award is conferred upon individuals who are shaping the future of the legal profession via innovation, notable leadership, and forward-thinking approaches. It serves to honour those who actively challenge the status quo and introduce transformative ideas for positive change in the legal landscape.
Judith's selection for the award came amidst strong competition, reflecting her vision and dedication to client care. She has been an instrumental figure in driving meaningful change, particularly in the context of surrogacy, which has gained popularity as a pathway to parenthood in England and Wales. However, the process is complex and sensitive, necessitating thorough planning and specialist advice from the very beginning.
Speaking about receiving the award, Judith said “It was a great honour to receive the award for Trailblazer in law presented to me by Kent Law Society. I am fortunate to have the backing of a progressive and independent firm established with over 245 years of knowledge and be part of a brilliant family team with leadership who likes to empower. Surrogacy is a sensitive, emotional and costly journey and, for some, the only way these intended parents can build their family. It was important to me that we could further our support for modern families in Kent, London and the surrounding areas, so that they can access clear and cost-effective legal advice when embarking on their surrogacy journey. So, I was very happy to accept the award on behalf of our surrogacy team here and we are so pleased to be able to help bring these special babies home.”
Through her work, Judith not only exemplifies professionalism in law but also inspires change and progress in a field that profoundly affects families, ensuring they have the resources and understanding they need as they navigate their unique journeys.
