Journalist among eight taking silk for work outside of legal practice

Britain's best-known legal journalist and commentator, Joshua Rozenberg, has been awarded an honorary QC by the independent Queen's Counsel Selection Panel.

Rozenberg, a non-practising solicitor, was recommended for his work as the nation's pre-eminent legal analyst. It is the latest in a string of accolades bestowed on the journalist who is an honorary bencher of Gray's Inn and was included by The Times in its independently judged list of the UK's 100 most influential lawyers in 2012.

He also holds honorary doctorates in law from the University of Hertfordshire, Nottingham Trent University, the University of Lincoln, and, most recently, the University of Law.

After completing his law degree at Oxford University, Rozenberg qualified as a solicitor in 1976. He became the BBC's first legal correspondent. He later joined the Daily Telegraph and is now a freelance writer and broadcaster, contributing to several publications including the Guardian. He currently presents the BBC's Law in Action on Radio 4.

Also appointed an honorary silk was King's College London's professor of constitutional law, Robert Blackburn, professor Adrian Briggs of the University of Oxford, Serle Court chambers's Jonathan Harris, Anne-Marie Hutchinson OBE, a solicitor specialising in international children's cases, the University of Birmingham's Ian Scott, Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation professor, Clive Walker, and Sara Chandler, a solicitor specialising in landlord and tenant law and a visiting professor at London South Bank University.

The Lord Chancellor, Michael Gove, congratulated the eight honorary silks: 'Their appointments recognise the major contribution each has made to the law of England and Wales outside of practice in the courts, in some cases in careers spanning many years'.

'I also commend the further 107 barristers and solicitors, who have demonstrated their excellence as advocates in practice, for their appointment to Queen's Counsel,' he added.
