IPO launches new digital patent services

The IPO has introduced new digital services to simplify managing, applying for, and renewing UK patents
In a significant move towards digital transformation, the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has launched a suite of new digital services designed to streamline the process of applying for, managing, and renewing UK patents. This initiative is part of the ‘One IPO’ programme, which aims to integrate services for patents, trade marks, and designs onto a single digital platform. As of today, all core patent services are accessible via this new platform, while trade marks and registered designs will be incorporated in the future.
Among the updates, the newly launched services include the ‘Manage intellectual property’ feature which allows users to create a digital account. This account becomes a central point from which users can easily handle their patents, check status at any time, and make quick updates. The ‘Apply for a patent’ service enhances the application process by enabling users to complete applications in any order, save drafts, and collaborate with colleagues, making the procedure far more flexible and user-friendly.
For those without previous IP experience, these services can be accessed via the updated Patents, trade marks, copyright and designs page on GOV.UK. Businesses with in-house IP teams may find that their organisations already have an account set up, simplifying access through designated admin users. It's reiterated that no new accounts should be created if an organisation's account is already in place.
In addition to the newly available services, existing ‘legacy’ services will be phased out, with users encouraged to transition to the new digital platform. For the foreseeable future, applications can still be submitted using the current Web Filing service until mid-2026, alongside various email submission methods.
Resources are plentiful for both new and seasoned users as the IPO provides updated guidance, demo videos, and weekly training webinars to facilitate navigating the new services. Furthermore, crucial information on fee changes accompanying these updates has been communicated to users.
The IPO's push towards modernised, user-friendly services marks a transformative step for enhancing intellectual property management in the UK.
