Hugh James has acquired Howat Avraam to boost its corporate, employment, and disputes capabilities in London
Hugh James, a top 100 UK law firm, is expanding its presence in London through the acquisition of specialist firm Howat Avraam. This strategic move strengthens its capabilities in corporate, employment, and dispute resolution, enhancing its overall service offerings in the capital. Howat Avraam is known for its expertise in commercial litigation, shareholder and director disputes, as well as employment matters across various sectors. Their approach aligns seamlessly with Hugh James’ commitment to delivering straightforward, high-quality legal advice to clients.
Effective from 1 May, Howat Avraam’s partners, Matthew Howat and Russell Osman, will join the firm’s City of London office located at 1 King’s Arms Yard. Matthew brings a rich background in commercial dispute resolution, while Russell will enhance the firm's corporate and commercial legal services. They will also be accompanied by senior associates Lee Edwards and Nazneen Ford, whose involvement will bolster both employment and corporate capabilities respectively. The firm aims to maintain continuity for its clients by working alongside workforce leadership expert and employment lawyer Niki Avraam and welcomes office manager Tara Maher for a smooth transition.
The integration of Howat Avraam is a critical milestone in Hugh James’ growth journey, significantly augmenting its disputes and corporate capabilities. It reinforces the firm’s ambition to develop a robust full-service presence in London and reflects an ongoing investment in its Business Division, providing support for clients dealing with complex commercial issues.
“There is a strong cultural alignment between the two firms,” said Alun Jones, Managing Partner at Hugh James, as he emphasised the shared commitment to client-focused, pragmatic advice and the cultivation of long-term relationships. Jones described Howat Avraam as a highly regarded team with technical expertise and a commercial mindset that harmonises with Hugh James’ operational ethos. His views were echoed by Ioan Prydderch, Head of the Business Division, who noted that the addition of Matthew and Russell would significantly bolster the firm’s disputes and corporate capabilities.
Matthew Howat expressed enthusiasm for this new chapter, stating, “Joining Hugh James was a natural fit for us. The firm’s national reach, strong client base and clear strategic direction align closely with our own approach.” This sentiment captures the essence of the collaboration, focusing on the shared objective of delivering practical, commercially sound legal counsel while nurturing lasting client relationships.
This acquisition is indicative of Hugh James' growth strategy as the firm consistently aims to enhance its sector expertise and expand its geographical reach across the UK, marking yet another significant achievement in its ongoing development.
