FOSTER CARERS

By Nicola Laver
A tribunal in Edinburgh may have paved the way for changes to the employment rights of foster carers after ruling a couple were workers, not selfemployed. The couple, who care for vulnerable children for Glasgow City Council, were awarded the right to sick pay, holiday pay, a guaranteed minimum wage and protections for whistleblowing. Although the judgment relates to one specific case, the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain has said others may 'follow suit in claiming the rights and protections they have been denied for decades'. 31 August 2020
