Firms still waiting for LAA compensation

A year after the LAA cyber-attack, legal aid firms are yet to receive any compensation needed to recover from the fallout
The Law Society of England and Wales actively calls for progress on this urgent matter, highlighting the significant impact on legal aid providers who support vulnerable individuals. “It’s disgraceful that a year on from the data breach that left legal aid firms out of pocket, they still haven’t been compensated by the LAA,” said Law Society president Mark Evans.
The attack on the Legal Aid Agency’s (LAA) systems last year left many firms facing unanticipated expenses, further exacerbating financial pressures on organisations that already operate on the fringes of economic viability. “These firms play a key role ensuring everyone has the right to justice and for their voices to be heard, irrespective of their circumstances, such as assisting survivors of domestic abuse and representing people facing eviction and housing disrepair.” Evans pointed out that many legal aid firms were put through substantial stress and a cumbersome bureaucratic process through no fault of their own. “No small business should be required to bear the burden of such major additional cost caused by the failings of a government department.”
The Law Society has long warned about the outdated computer systems at the LAA, which have hindered crucial reforms, including essential updates to the means test designed to help millions more access legal support. The cyber-attack has not only delayed these necessary changes but has also drawn attention to the urgent need for investment in legal aid infrastructure. “We are seeking clarity from UK government on their timetable for implementing the means test changes,” added Mark Evans. He emphasised the vital nature of legal aid, saying, “Legal aid provision is crucial to ensuring a level playing field for justice. There is still time for the government to make the right investment to ensure legal advice and support is available to all of us"
