Fieldfisher advises CarpeCarbon on DAC project

Fieldfisher has successfully advised CarpeCarbon in an innovative partnership with Michelin Italiana to launch a Direct Air Capture plant which aims to remove atmospheric CO₂ and integrate it into the industrial processes at Michelin's facility in Cuneo
This groundbreaking project marks the first DAC plant integrated into an industrial production framework, following the validation of CarpeCarbon's solution via its pilot plant in Turin. As part of the agreement, carbon dioxide extracted from the atmosphere will be redirected for specific applications at the Michelin plant, allowing the facility to decrease reliance on external carbon dioxide suppliers. Any excess CO₂ captured will be independently managed by CarpeCarbon, destined for permanent storage to ensure it is effectively removed from the atmosphere.
Fieldfisher Italy brought together a diverse team to offer specialised support for this initiative. This team included Diego Rigatti and Filippo Attanasio, who focused on the transaction's technical elements by structuring the industrial agreement, regulating technological interfaces, and protecting intellectual property. Energy-related aspects concerning the DAC plant’s integration into the existing industrial site were overseen by Giorgio Castorina and Giorgia Mulinacci, ensuring that the captured carbon could be commercially utilised, alongside the generation of carbon credits linked to the project.
CarpeCarbon sees this venture as a crucial step in its development strategy, aiming to boost its CO₂ capture capacity to 5,000 tonnes per annum by 2028-2029 and further to 50,000 tonnes annually from 2030 onwards. Notably, this growth model will embrace modular plants adaptable to current industrial environments, utilising on-site waste heat and standalone solar-powered options for energy needs. This collaboration exemplifies Fieldfisher's expertise in merging technology and energy sectors to foster innovation within the energy transition movement and advance new technological solutions.
