Non-practising solicitors may be required to make an annual application and pay a fee to remain on the roll

The SRA has launched a consultation on plans to reintroduce the requirement for non-practising solicitors to complete an annual application to remain on the roll. The proposed change stems from recent changes to data protection law. The SRA has proposed to restore the annual keeping of the roll exercise from April 2023 and to reintroduce an associated administration fee of between £30 and £40. Solicitors who do not opt to remain on the roll would lose the right to refer to themselves as a non-practising solicitor or access associated benefits.
