EIP has appointed Stuart Malcolm as a partner, enhancing its Commercial practice with his expertise in law and innovation
EIP is excited to announce the addition of Stuart Malcolm as a Partner, Solicitor, to bolster its Commercial practice. With over 25 years of extensive experience in commercial and intellectual property law, Stuart's career encompasses a wide array of roles, including private practice, senior in-house leadership, and significant involvement in the deep tech and innovation sectors.
Stuart previously served at M Squared, a leading UK photonics and quantum technology company, for nearly ten years as a senior legal leader. During his tenure as Group General Counsel and Group Company Secretary, he successfully built and led the group-wide legal function that spans a global business, with responsibilities that included legal operations, compliance, and intellectual property. His impactful work involved creating and leading the group's intellectual property strategy while advising on major commercial and licensing agreements, ranging from international deals across the sectors of space, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. This experience allowed him to collaborate closely with businesses as they scaled, granting him a practical understanding of how innovative companies convert their ideas into commercial value.
Before his in-house move, Stuart held partner positions at several esteemed law firms. He established and led the intellectual property team at Shoosmiths in the Thames Valley, served as a Partner at MBM Commercial, and even founded his own specialist technology and innovation law firm, Stuart Malcolm LLP. His earlier legal career included senior positions at Oxford University Press and a University of Oxford spin-out, providing him with an exceptional blend of experience spanning private practice, in-house roles, and commercial insights.
Stuart's expertise extends to advising businesses across the innovation economy, whether they be start-ups, scale-ups, research institutions, universities, or established technology companies. His work encompasses commercial contracts, licensing, joint ventures, spin-outs, technology transfer, and the commercialisation of intellectual property. He possesses deep sector knowledge in various fields including quantum technologies, photonics, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, life sciences, and space.
A qualified solicitor in both Scotland and England and Wales, as well as a Notary Public, Stuart holds an honours degree in Commercial Law from the University of Glasgow. Magnus Hallin, CEO of EIP, expressed enthusiasm about Stuart's addition, stating "We are very pleased to welcome Stuart to EIP. He brings a rare mix of commercial, in-house, and private practice experience, and a deep understanding of how innovative businesses turn intellectual property into commercial value." Hallin further noted that Stuart's arrival strengthens their Commercial practice and supports EIP's commitment to providing clients with clear and practical advice on crucial commercial and intellectual property decisions.
Stuart's appointment is a reflection of EIP's ongoing investment in commercial expertise that complements their patent and litigation strengths, ultimately helping clients to protect, develop, and commercialise their most valuable ideas
