In 2017, there was a 17 per cent rise on the previous year in requests for UK driver details from EU authorities under the Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) system, according to Thomson Reuters. Britain signed up two years ago to MLA which makes it easier to prosecute foreign drivers for a range of offences after drivers have left the country in which the alleged offence occurred. Kevin McCormac, editor of Wilkinson's Road Traffic Offences, said: 'It can be very tough for British drivers abroad as they are unlikely to know the finer details of local road traffic rules in other countries and, as a result it can be very easy to be caught out.' 10 June 2019
