Deloitte fined for audit failures in fraud case

Deloitte has been fined £11m for failing to report fraud concerns during audits of Go Ahead Group
Big Four accounting firm Deloitte has faced a significant penalty from the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) due to failures in its audits of the Go Ahead Group (GAG), a company that operates various train services across the UK. An £11 million fine was imposed for neglecting to report concerns regarding fraud, specifically related to the mishandling of taxpayer funds. This fine was reduced to £6.05 million due to Deloitte's early admission of fault and cooperation with the investigation.
The FRC pointed out that during its audits conducted between the financial years of 2016 and 2020, Deloitte overlooked the wrongful retention of over £30 million in taxpayer funds linked to overpayments made to the Department for Transport (DfT). Additionally, Deloitte failed to act upon the transport group's concerns about these financial discrepancies.
Gena Ritchie, a solicitor at the law firm VWV, remarked on the implications of the FRC's decision, stating “Professional advisers have a public responsibility and, whilst they are of course not responsible for an unrelated and underlying fraud, advisors often have access to key information and are therefore uniquely placed to spot warning signs, raise concerns and scrutinise explanations.” She emphasised that the FRC's action underscores a growing anti-fraud culture in the UK, further bolstered by recent legislative measures, including the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023.
The outcome serves as a powerful reminder that professional advisors have a crucial role in identifying and addressing potential wrongdoing, reinforcing the responsibility of firms to maintain diligence and transparency in their financial practices.
