UK law firm Cobbetts has been voted in by the US based State Capital Law Firm Group as the individual firm to represent Manchester. Cobbetts was voted into the Group by the Board of Directors and other US and international members in early March following an invitation to join at the end of last year. Cobbetts becomes one of only five UK firms to be approved as associate international members alongside firms from Birmingham, Edinburgh, Cambridge and London.

The State Capital Law Firm Group is a loose association of firms who practise independently and was established as a non-profit making organisation in 1989. The Group was formed as a result of a new direction in US Government and a shift of power to individual states and with the arrival of the global economy membership was expanded to include firms outside the US.

The Group, established with 50 independent US firm representatives, now has over 100 members from the US, Canada, Mexico and South and Central America, the Caribbean and Bermuda, the Asia/Pacific rim, Africa and Europe; however it intends to form a global network and ultimately to have representation throughout the world.

Members, generally from capital cities or major commercial centres, operate on a non-exclusive basis and meet up twice annually for discussion and exchange of practice area information.

Commenting on the outcome of the vote Stephen White, Cobbetts' senior partner, stated: "We are delighted to be a member of the State Capital Law firm Group. This will enable us to establish relationships with law firms throughout the world so that our clients can have access to legal advice wherever they do business."
