CLC launches fast-track route for graduates

The Council for Licensed Conveyancers has introduced a streamlined qualification path for law graduates interested in conveyancing and probate careers
The Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) has recently unveiled an innovative fast-track qualification route designed specifically for law graduates seeking careers in conveyancing and probate. This new initiative allows those with a recognised law degree to bypass the Level 4 Diploma, which usually certifies them as a conveyancing or probate technician. Instead, graduates can directly pursue the Level 6 Diploma, which, paired with two years of supervised work experience, will grant them licensed practitioner status, equipping them with the same rights as a solicitor within their selected field.
Under the provisions of the Legal Services Act, CLC lawyers are classified as authorised practitioners in the realms of conveyancing and probate, which remain integral components of the legal landscape. The recent introduction of the Professional Experience Exemption further encourages individuals already engaged in these sectors to advance their careers. Additionally, there is an Advanced Probate Exemption aimed at professionals belonging to the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).
Claire Richardson, director of authorisations at the CLC, outlines the significance of this initiative, stating “With the demand for conveyancing and probate lawyers continuing to grow, this is an exciting opportunity for graduates which recognises the legal studies they have already undertaken and offers them a time-efficient and cost-effective route to qualification.” She adds, “Graduates who are already working in conveyancing or probate have the chance to qualify in as little as two years depending on their pace of study and the relevance of their role.” For those yet to find employment, this qualification path represents an approachable entry point into the profession, setting the foundation for a career that can be both fulfilling and financially rewarding.
Ultimately, the financial burden of completing the Law Graduate Fast Track Exemption is estimated at around £2,000. The course structure allows students to integrate their studies with practical work experience, making it possible to qualify without incurring significant additional student debt. This advancement in legal education underscores the CLC's commitment to fostering new talent in vital legal sectors.
