Carpmaels & Ransford welcomes Jonathan Stafford

Carpmaels & Ransford has announced the appointment of Jonathan Stafford as Partner in its Chemistry practice
Carpmaels & Ransford, a leading European intellectual property firm, has just welcomed Jonathan Stafford as a Partner in its Chemistry practice. With extensive expertise in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, Jonathan previously held a partnership at Marks & Clerk since 2017. His addition marks the firm’s fourth partner hire this year, coinciding with its 250th anniversary.
Jonathan's impressive academic background includes a first-class degree in Chemistry from the University of Manchester, alongside a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. He launched his career as a process research chemist at AstraZeneca before becoming a patent attorney at Carpmaels & Ransford in 2007. Since then, he has developed a diverse practice that encompasses pharmaceuticals, chemistry, life sciences, and medical technologies, focusing on areas such as small molecule pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and advanced materials.
Renowned for managing complex patent disputes, Jonathan has represented multinational corporations as well as start-ups. His achievements include leading EPO oppositions and appeals, navigating cross-border legal proceedings, and participating in high-stakes revocation actions at the Unified Patent Court. Notably, he was part of the team involved in the first full merits hearing in a UPC revocation action at the Paris Central Division. Additionally, he played a significant role in the landmark inventive step case Edwards v Meril at the UPC Court of Appeal.
Beyond contentious matters, Jonathan also advises clients on strategic European IP portfolio management, assisting with issues surrounding validity, licensing, and investment transactions. His contributions to the field have been recognised by various legal directories, earning him accolades as a Rising Star and recognition from IP Stars, IAM Patent 1000, JUVE, and Legal 500.
James Warner, Senior Partner at Carpmaels & Ransford, expressed enthusiasm over Jonathan's return, stating, “Jonathan’s formidable reputation is well-earned: there are few that can boast his stellar academic credentials, hands-on industry experience and outstanding track record.” Warner further emphasised that Jonathan’s focus on life sciences and medical technologies would enhance the firm’s capabilities at the UPC.
In his own words, Jonathan remarked, “The European patent landscape is fast-changing, and with the advent of the UPC, clients and their advisors need to be ever-evolving." He noted the firm’s historic dedication to innovation, stating, “Carpmaels & Ransford has done just that for centuries and has continually maintained a deserved reputation as a leader in the field." Expressing excitement about his return, Jonathan added, “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to build on the firm’s incredible heritage while forging new ground."
