Akerman names Michael Adler as director of AI governance

Akerman has announced the appointment of Michael Adler as its new Director of AI Governance & Data Protection within Akerman Intelligence, marking a significant shift for the firm. Based in Washington, D.C., Adler's role comes as a response to the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, transitioning from merely using AI tools to establishing the necessary governance frameworks for their responsible deployment in enterprises. This newly created position exemplifies Akerman’s vision that the development of AI governance and accountability is crucial for future operations.

In his new role, Adler will focus on enhancing Akerman's AI governance while assisting clients in navigating the legal and operational challenges associated with AI adoption. Scott Meyers, Chairman and CEO of Akerman, highlighted the urgency of addressing the advanced nature of AI, stating “The question now for every enterprise is whether its AI governance framework is equipped for the shift from obedient AI tools to autonomous agentic systems.” He emphasised that “very few legal advisors have had to answer that question from the inside,” underscoring Adler's unique qualifications given his previous experience with leading technology companies.

Adler joins the firm after serving as Head of Global Data Privacy and AI at Highspot, where he successfully created governance frameworks for AI products and spearheaded the company's global data protection strategy. His career includes significant positions at Autodesk and Amazon, as well as a background in advising corporate clients at Kirkland & Ellis and Dechert. Additionally, Adler has a distinguished history as a senior intelligence officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency, focusing on counterterrorism efforts.

Academically, Adler holds a master’s degree from the University of Cambridge Judge Business School and a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School. His dissertation on the General Data Protection Regulation received a Distinction, showcasing his expertise in data privacy issues. Maintaining active ties to Cambridge's technology community, Adler is set to strengthen Akerman’s connections within the U.K.'s AI and technology ecosystem.

Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Adler remarked, “Organizations are asking increasingly sophisticated questions about artificial intelligence.
