X-Press Legal Services is advocating for law firms to support the UK Government’s efforts to enhance national cyber security
X-Press Legal Services has issued a call for law firms to align with the UK Government’s latest initiative aimed at bolstering national cyber defences. With the cyber threat landscape becoming increasingly severe, especially within the legal sector, the company has welcomed the Government's announcement to improve cyber resilience. This announcement is not just a response to the growing threats; it signifies the need for legal practices to prioritise strong, verifiable security measures for their operations and supply chains. The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill currently making its way through Parliament follows today's King’s Speech and underscores the Government's commitment to enhancing cyber resilience, investing in skills, and fostering innovation.
The timing of this initiative is crucial for law firms, as they handle a rising volume of sensitive client data, particularly in areas such as property transactions that are more susceptible to cyber threats. Christian Lister, Operations Director of X-Press Legal Services, highlighted the importance of the Government's focus, stating, “The Government’s continued investment in cyber security is hugely encouraging, particularly for the legal sector where data protection and regulatory compliance are paramount.” He further noted that with law firms facing increasing attacks from cyber criminals, it is essential to maintain strong and consistent security standards throughout the conveyancing process.
The recent Government announcement has emphasised the need to strengthen organisational resilience and to support businesses in adopting more robust cyber security practices, which align closely with the regulatory expectations within the legal profession. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) continues to advocate for Cyber Essentials Plus certification as a critical standard for effective cyber risk management.
X-Press Legal Services has taken significant steps in this regard, recently achieving Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation for the fifth consecutive year. This accomplishment reflects the company's long-standing commitment to instilling rigorous, independently verified cyber security measures across the legal supply chain. “Cyber security is not just an IT issue for law firms, it is a fundamental part of client care, risk management and regulatory compliance,” Christian remarked. By maintaining high accreditation standards, the firm ensures that legal practices can operate confidently, knowing that their data supply chain is secure.
The company’s cyber security efforts are part of a broader strategic focus it has termed AI: Actual Intelligence, balancing advanced technology with the essential human expertise it provides to clients. X-Press Legal Services operates through a network of 27 locally owned offices across England and Wales, continually investing in technology that enhances efficiency and supports the conveyancing workflow.
“The pace of technological change is hugely exciting, but it also presents significant risks for law firms,” Christian cautioned. He stressed the need for thorough scrutiny of every new advancement, asserting that innovation must be supported by rigorous security and informed professional judgement. This combination, he believes, delivers both tangible value and essential protection for law firms and their clients.
