The legal landscape in Northern Ireland has recently seen a significant enhancement with the appointment of Claire Archbold as the new Crown Solicitor. Lord Hermer KC, the Advocate General for Northern Ireland and the Attorney General for England and Wales, made the announcement following an open recruitment campaign. Consultation was conducted with Dame Brenda King, the Attorney General for Northern Ireland.
In her new role, Archbold will lead the Crown Solicitor’s Office (CSO), which is integral in providing legal services to public bodies in Northern Ireland as well as the UK Government. The services offered by the CSO range from judicial reviews and inquests to employment, immigration, and property law, ensuring comprehensive legal support across various domains.
Claire Archbold comes to this position from the Executive Office, where she was instrumental in leading the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy. She previously served as the Deputy Departmental Solicitor, managing legal teams that addressed significant issues within the devolved administrations. This appointment marks the beginning of a five-year term, with the potential for extension, reaffirming the importance of stable legal leadership in Northern Ireland.
Upon her appointment, Lord Hermer KC expressed confidence in Archbold's capabilities by stating that "The Crown Solicitor’s Office advises on some of the most complex and sensitive issues in Northern Ireland." He added that Archbold "brings a wealth of legal and leadership experience" and highlighted his anticipation of collaborating with her to provide excellent legal services and uphold the rule of law.
Archbold herself conveyed enthusiasm for her new role, highlighting, "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead the Crown Solicitor’s Office in its work across a range of challenging issues and look forward to getting to know the team of excellent lawyers there."
Similarly, Dame Brenda King expressed her support, stating, "I am delighted to hear of Clare’s appointment. I have worked with Clare for many years on a wide range of legal projects. She has a wealth of experience to bring to the role and I look forward to working with her again."
With this strategic appointment, the Crown Solicitor’s Office is set to continue its crucial work in delivering legal assistance and guidance, supporting public bodies and playing a vital role in the governance of Northern Ireland.
