AVOID FRIDAY RELEASE

By Nicola Laver
Prisoners with complex needs should not be released on Friday afternoons, a report from the Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) said. In the first half of 2018, 11,080 people were released from prison on a Friday which was more than a third of the average weekly total. This means many prisoners can find themselves without money, accommodation or other support '“ and at greater risk of reoffending. There is also a greater risk of death. The ACMD said death rates among prisoners, especially those on postrelease supervision, are many times higher than in the general population. 12 June 2019
