Andrew Begg prohibited from practicing for five years

By

Andrew Philip Begg, an unregistered barrister, has been barred from obtaining a practising certificate for five years following a disciplinary tribunal's conclusion on April 4, 2024

The tribunal found him guilty of professional misconduct based on charges brought by the Bar Standards Board (BSB).

The charges stem from findings of professional misconduct against Mr. Begg by the Royal Court of Jersey, as detailed in judgments from 2012 and 2014. Subsequently, in 2022, additional charges of professional misconduct led to Mr. Begg's removal from the roll of Advocates of the Court by the Royal Court of Jersey. The misconduct involved Mr. Begg's failure to forward crucial correspondence from the opposing party to his client and altering a without prejudice email before forwarding it to his client. Additionally, Mr. Begg neglected to promptly report the disciplinary findings from the Royal Court of Jersey to the BSB. Furthermore, he failed to fulfil his professional obligations by not reporting disciplinary proceedings by another regulator, The Law Society of Jersey, to the BSB.

A spokesperson for the BSB emphasised the severity of Mr. Begg's actions, labelling them as serious professional misconduct, as evidenced by his removal from the roll of Advocates of the Court in Jersey. Failing to disclose disciplinary proceedings and findings of professional misconduct to a regulator further compounds the seriousness of the matter.

The tribunal's decision remains subject to appeal, providing Mr. Begg with an avenue for recourse.
