Top-100 UK law firm Speechly Bircham has expanded its international presence by opening an office in Geneva.

The firm said the move, which follows launches in Zurich and Luxembourg in 2011, forms part of its growth plans.

The Geneva office is headed by newly recruited international private client lawyers Michael Wells-Greco and Francis Rojas, who worked together for many years at Withers in Geneva and, more recently, at Maitland.

Mark Summers continues as head of the firm's Swiss practice.

"The office in Geneva represents an important development in the firm's international expansion," said senior partner Michael Lingens.

"Growing client demand for joined-up corporate and private wealth expertise made a second presence in Switzerland a logical next move for us."

Switzerland is home to a third of the world's privately held wealth and a quarter of its private banking.

Lingens announced the firm's intention "to open a third office in a major European location this autumn, with a significant team hire" in May.

Speechlys had been in merger talks with fellow top-100 firm Withers earlier this year but partners on both sides voted against the move.
