Real Football, Real Fans - A journey to the heart of football

During the 2007-2008 soccer season, the fans of football clubs as far apart as Wycombe Wanderers, Rotherham United and Accrington Stanley, might have noticed a gaunt, faintly solicitorial figure standing in their midst munching a pie and scribbling notes and spilling crumbs.

It all started around 50 years earlier in an orchard in Elm, a village near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. There, a scrawny schoolboy had persuaded his parents to erect two goalposts in a clearing amid the ageing yellow egg plum trees; so that his little band of young footballers could do battle against other enthusiasts while the parents, two horses, one whippet, one mongrel, an assortment of chickens and a wimpish sibling looked on.

The scrawny schoolboy was my brother William, also a contributor to the pages of Solicitors Journal, and now the author of Real Football, Real Fans.
